Genesis 3:22 & The Singularity

If anyone is familiar with the works of futurists or more specifically the work and ideas of Ray Kurzweil, you might be familiar that one of his life’s energies are spent on The Singularity.

Writing in ‘The Singularity is Near’, Kurzweil says that ‘The Singularity will allow us to transcend these limitations of our biological bodies and brains. We will gain power over our fates. Our mortality will be in our own hands. We will be able to live as long as we want (a subtly different statement from saying we will live forever).’’ Page 9

The temerity of Kurzweil and his childlike aspirational motives are to be lauded with a good sense of humour. These are the same people who bring in innovative technologies that invade our bodies, alter the very structure of our human organs and create a science & business out of it and justify it in the name of medical research to give people better lives. And people believe in instantly!

Modern life has caused changes to the body and with our lifestyle - driven by the food we eat, the air we breathe, the products we use- there has been the rise of many diseases and illnesses that seem to have no cure even with the best technologies around us. Of course, there have been diseases that has always riddled man ever since the start of life but it is a fact of our fallen bodies. Diseases and illness besides being hereditary or part of our birth genes, mostly arise from what we put inside our bodies and how our organs deal with it.

Medical research and science has brought in technologies that have helped those in suffering to feel relieved for a while through medication, preventive therapies, vaccinations, & life saving surgeries. While most of these life-saving & life-altering surgeries are expensive to afford for the common man, those who are able to afford them have the probabilities of extending their lifespan by a little bit but of course not infinitely. A doctor or surgeon is another human being, after all. We sometimes think of doctors as immortal agents on this planet who have the control over life and death. A true doctor is one who says that he or she can do the best with the technologies and medication they have and the rest we leave to the Eternal father.

But in our current world where we claim to be the most advanced, most civilised and technologically potent, yet the number of people being infected with heart diseases, cancers, respiratory diseases, diabetes and other serious concerns doesn’t prove that the world is in a better place. Therefore even the best medical innovation or technology can only give a temporary reprieve.

The global pandemic and the treatment program proved that even with the rapidly introduced treatment that people chose to take, people were still being diagnosed and deaths were occurring.

In all of this, we have the idea of the Singularity, where a prime motive of Kurzweil is to achieve eternal life through a mastery of our bodies and control of the organs. Hence doing away with our natural bodies and need to fix it constantly. The ‘fixing’ that will come courtesy of the Singularity will be of a different kind.

Who are we kidding? Man who professes himself to be wise is in reality is being foolish (Romans 1:26). Man cannot even add a square inch to his own skin, hair or nails, or control growth or control the waters of the world is talking about mastering our fallen bodies right through eternity?

This nature has been emanating from that tree of good and evil. All that we think and do while in our bodies stems from the initiation our human spirit received when we took from the fruit of the knowledge of the world. The evil part of the fruit in always in contradiction to the eternal righteousness that only Christ can give.

What people like Kurzweil are doing is playing with fire yet again. In Genesis 3:22, God banished fallen man from the garden of Eden to avoid him from eating from the tree of life. And here, we are coming close to the point where we are trying to re-enter that garden so to speak and looking at the fruit of life and just waiting to grab the fruit (so called Singularity) and partake of it and live forever.

Time and time again, whenever man has decided to try and alter the original designs and disturb the unfolding plan, he always received a setback. There is a thread running of this in Genesis right until the book of Revelation.

Until that fruit is completely exhausted and eaten to the last bit, the work of the this temporal world will not end. Only when all evil is completely exhausted will God then begin to reveal the start of the journey to the tree of life.
